With a population of around 20,000, Dillingen is a medium-sized town and is one of the most important economic and industrial locations in Saarland. The Dillinger Hüttenwerk (AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke), one of the largest and most modern steelworks in Europe, is particularly well known. Industry, especially steel production, still characterizes the townscape and history of Dillingen today.

In addition to industry, Dillingen also has cultural and scenic attractions. Several cycling and hiking trails run along the Saar, and the surrounding countryside offers many opportunities for local recreation.
